Degree thesis - Blockchain and its contribution to the Smart City
“While exploring new methods to address urban challenges, the concept of smart cities can guide cities to become more resilient and responsive to crises. In the current scenario, global crises and their human and economic impact have provided a new impetus for the adoption of emerging technologies.
The implementation of artificial intelligence and “Internet of Things” in the urban ecosystem has generated unprecedented demand for ensuring data transparency, security and privacy.
For this purpose, blockchain, a technology characterized by guaranteeing the integrity and authenticity of information, has found a wide variety of applications within cities. This makes the aforementioned technology critical in the effort to make cities more sustainable by addressing several goals stipulated in the Sustainable Development Goals, set out by the United Nations.
This paper aims to analyze what is the contribution of blockchain technology in the context of the smart city. To this end, the concepts of blockchain and smart city are defined, and the points of convergence between them are identified, giving as an example three specific case studies in which this technology has already been applied to improve different areas of the city.”
